Sutherland Wash Rock Art District
March 2 @ 8:30 am - 2:00 pm MST
Join AAHS and Bill Gillespie, retired Coronado Forest Service archaeologist and AAHS board member for a ½ day tour to Sutherland Wash, one of the largest rock imagery sites in the Tucson basin. Glyphs include flowers, a stunning bighorn sheep panel, barbell figures, solar markers, and many other elements. Stan Ponczek, AAHS board member will be facilitating this trip.
Visiting the Sutherland Wash petroglyphs involves moderately strenuous hiking on undeveloped trails for 5-6 miles. Although elevation gain is modest, the visit requires negotiating rocky sections and crossing small drainages. Please don’t signup if you are not prepared for this level of physical activity.
The group will meet at the Basha’s at the corner of North Oracle Road (SR77) and East Golder Ranch Road in Catalina at 8:30 am. As part of the drive to the trailhead requires a high clearance vehicle, we will consolidate/carpool from the Basha’s parking lot for the 3.5-mile drive to the trailhead. We will plan on having a short lunch stop near Sheep Tank and be back at the vehicles by 2 PM. You will need good hiking boots, poles if you chose, plenty of water, and sun protection. There will be no facilities or restrooms on this trip, so be prepared.
This field trip is open to AAHS Members only and is limited to 20 participants, so register now! To register or inquire about more information, email AAHS at AAHS1916@gmail.com.
