Instructions for Research & Travel Grants

Proposal Submission and Reporting Requirements

Applications and proposals are accepted between January 1 to February 15 each year for Research and Travel grants.

Research Grants

Proposal Instructions

In addition to the application form the applicant should submit a research proposal.

Proposals should include:

  1. Research objectives
  2. Theoretical approach and techniques to be used for data collection and analysis
  3. Relevance of techniques to objectives
  4. Expected research gain
  5. Means of sharing information with the public and professional community (e.g., lectures, displays, papers, etc.)
  6. How avocational archaeologists will be incorporated if appropriate
  7. Indication that appropriate permits and (if needed) Human Subjects Authorization have been obtained
  8. Repository where research, documentation and articles (if appropriate) will be housed
  9. Itemized budget, detailing complete project expenses, with that portion to be covered by AAHS grant indicated. Small items (non-capital equipment) may be considered as part of the budget.
  10. List any other support you have applied for or received to support this research

Proposal Process

Format

The text should not exceed 3 pages excluding tables, figures and references.

The text should be single-spaced, 12-point with one-inch margins.

Review and Evaluation

Proposals are reviewed by the AAHS Research Grant Committee and evaluated on a 10-point scale on the basis of:

Report Requirements for Research Grants

Grant recipients are required to report the results of their research or travel to the Chair of the Research Committee within 90 days of completion. If the research extends beyond the calendar year of the award, the recipient must present a progress report as well as a final report on the completion of the project. In addition, recipients may be asked to give a brief presentation at an AAHS meeting or to submit a short report for publication in Glyphs, the Society’s newsletter. Your report should be emailed to the Chair of the Research Committee.

Grant Fund Use Examples

Items such as specialized analysis, travel to view Museum collections or sites, or supplies other than the equipment needed for a particular study.

Travel Grants

In addition to the application form, the applicant should submit a short proposal that indicates the reason for attending the meeting, for example, presenting a paper, invited discussant, etc., and should outline the expected benefit of attending the conference or workshop. Include a copy of the presentation abstract if applicable.

Reporting Requirements for Travel Grants

If a paper or poster was presented at the conference a copy should be sent to the Chair of the Research Committee. If no paper was presented please submit a short summary of activities participated in at the conference.
