Romero Ruin in Catalina State Park is one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites within the northern Tucson Basin. The ruins are the remains of a Hohokam village that was occupied between A.D. 500 and A.D. 1450. Also visible at the site are the remains of more recent structures built by rancher Francisco Romero and extensive prehistoric agricultural fields. Bill Gillespie, archaeologist with the Coronado National Forest Service, will lead a tour of the site and it’s surrounds. Meet at Catalina State Park at 9:00 am. The tour will last until around noon so you should bring a snack, water, and wear hiking shoes. We will cover a couple of miles of not too strenuous walking. There is an entrance fee for the Park.
