F. Lewis Orrell, Jr. -Carryl B. Martin-Research Grant

This annual $5,000 award honors two of AAHS’s benefactors, Carryl B. Martin and F. Lewis Orrell Jr., whose bequests to the Society made this award possible. All applicants must be members of AAHS. No funding will be granted to any project that violates the AAHS ethical precepts, as laid out in the AAHS Bylaws.

A single award of $5,000.00 will be given annually to a high-quality archaeological or historical research project that focuses on significant questions in the archaeology or history of the southwestern US or northern Mexico. In the spirit of Carryl Martin and F. Lewis Orrell Jr., projects that provide opportunities for participation by avocational researchers or collaborate with descendent communities will be prioritized.

Application Deadline: Applications may be submitted between January 1 and February 15, each year and must be submitted electronically. All applicants must be members of AAHS.

Application Review

Review Process

Applications will be reviewed by the AAHS Research Grants Committee, and recommendations submitted to the AAHS Board of Directors for approval. AAHS reserves the right to not award a grant in any cycle if no proposal of sufficient merit is received. The following elements will be considered in the review of applications:

1. What is the potential for the proposed activity to advance knowledge and understanding of the archaeology of the southwestern United States or northern Mexico?

2. To what extent do the proposed activities suggest and explore creative, original, or potentially transformative concepts?

3. Is the plan for carrying out the proposed activities well-reasoned, well-organized, and based on a sound rationale?

4. The proposal includes confirmation of necessary permits, institutional approval, a data management plan, and approval from affiliated cultural groups.
